The government-operated ferry had a capacity of 90, according to authorities, although crew members estimated there were over 150 on board.

One of the two surviving crew members, Anyway Chambati, told local broadcaster ZBC News that about 153 people were aboard, including crew and infants, according to the Associated Press. Local Zimbabwean member of Parliament, Mutsa Murombedzi, posted a video on Wednesday that she said showed people being crammed into the ferry at the shore. Witnesses said the passengers begged the captain to turn back as the waves grew dangerous, but were rebuffed, ZBC News reported. The captain also refused to call for help, claiming that his boat had “never sunk anyone,” witnesses added. Passengers also argued with the captain at the harbor and petitioned him to stay docked because the waves were already dangerously high, one woman said.

A bystander video showed the severely overcrowded ferry flipping completely upside down. Official help did not arrive until nearly hour later, and passengers recalled floating in the water holding onto bags of goods or standing on top of the ship’s overturned hull. The state-run Herald newspaper reported that the ferry’s captain was among the 44 dead. Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the capsizing a state of disaster, allowing the government to mobilize extra resources to aid the victims.

In an unrelated incident, a ferry in southern Indonesia sank on Wednesday after catching fire in rough waters, according to the Jakarta Globe, a local outlet. Search and rescue crews pulled more than 170 people from the water off the island of Bali, along with the remains of one passenger, according to the outlet. Initial reports based on the ship’s manifest logged 114 people, not including crew members, aboard the ferry, recording only a fraction of the number rescued.

Loading the Audio Player… Survivors of a ferry sinking on Tuesday recalled frantically pleading with the captain of…

[60
179220,22260,19033,3224,43004,106
post-375422","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-zimbabwe","tag-bali","tag-deaths","tag-disasters","tag-ferry","tag-shipwreck","tag-zimbabwe
["GET
