rainfall and chilly weather on April 29, 2026. /FILE

Most parts of Kenya are expected to remain generally dry between August 13 and 20, with rainfall forecast in eight counties, according to the Kenya Meteorological Service.

The weather outlook indicates that Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kericho, Nyandarua and Nyeri may receive rainfall during the period.

In its rainfall forecast for this week, the Kenya Meteorological Service said most parts of the country would experience generally dry conditions.

“Most parts of the country are expected to be generally dry,” the service said.

The forecast places the eight counties among areas that could receive rainfall during the period, while several other counties are expected to experience intermittent cool and cloudy conditions.

The cool and cloudy conditions are expected in parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Marsabit and Wajir counties.

Nyandarua and Nyeri are therefore included in both categories, with the forecast indicating that the counties may receive rainfall while also experiencing intermittent cool and cloudy conditions in some areas.

Residents in the counties forecast to receive rainfall can expect changes from the predominantly dry conditions experienced across much of the country, while those in areas expected to remain cool and cloudy may experience lower temperatures and increased cloud cover.

The Kenya Meteorological Service issues weather forecasts to support planning and preparedness across different sectors, including agriculture, transport, health and disaster management.

Counties urged to prepare for El Niño rains

Meanwhile, counties at high risk have been urged to activate their anticipatory mechanisms ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains.

The counties include Homa Bay, Kisumu and Nakuru, where <a worst-case scenario to protect lives and property ahead of the anticipated El Niño-driven heavy rainfall during the October-November-December short rains season.

The meteorologists warned that El Niño-triggered rains could cause backflow in lakes, potentially resulting in displacement.

“The two signals, the strong El Nino and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole, could enhance the rainfall, triggering an early onset of the season which could begin with torrential heavy rainfall resulting in flash floods over different parts of the country,” said Misiani Zachary, a Disaster Risk Management and Anticipatory Action Expert at the Kenya Met.

Speaking during a webinar on the potential impacts of the rains in Kenya, Misiani said Lake Victoria and Lake Naivasha are among the lakes that could be affected by water backflow.

Nairobi residents brave early morning rainfall and chilly weather on April
