{"id":383066,"date":"2026-08-18T00:43:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T00:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/383066\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T00:43:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T00:43:14","slug":"mt-kenya-unity-kirinyaga-elders-reject-east-west-divide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/383066\/","title":{"rendered":"Mt Kenya unity: Kirinyaga elders reject East-West divide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/a7febfb1-345f-4467-82c0-a2ab3be355b0.webp\" style=\"max-width: 100%; width: 100%;\"\/>John Gathungu, an elder, addressing journalists during a meeting in Kirinyaga on August 17, 2026\/ ALICE WAITHERA<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A section of Kikuyu elders from&#13;<br \/>\nKirinyaga County has rejected attempts to create separate Mt Kenya East and Mt&#13;<br \/>\nKenya West political blocs, warning that the move could divide the region for&#13;<br \/>\nindividual political gain.<\/p>\n<p>The elders, drawn from the Kiama Kia&#13;<br \/>\nMa outfit, also distanced themselves from a meeting held in Embu last week by&#13;<br \/>\nelders from the Njuri Ncheke Supreme Council, Nyaangi Ndiriri, Kiama Kia&#13;<br \/>\nMuembu, Ngome and Mwea Council of Elders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very angry that there are&#13;<br \/>\nleaders who aren\u2019t even from Kirinyaga making absurd proclamations that parts&#13;<br \/>\nof Kirinyaga should be and will be part of Mt Kenya East,\u201d Chief Elder Muriithi&#13;<br \/>\nWarutere said.<\/p>\n<p>The Embu meeting brought together&#13;<br \/>\nelders from Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga and Isiolo, who declared&#13;<br \/>\nthemselves the Mt Kenya East Councils of Elders and endorsed Deputy President&#13;<br \/>\nKithure Kindiki as President William Ruto\u2019s running mate in the 2027 General&#13;<br \/>\nElection. They also backed his future presidential ambitions. <\/p>\n<p>In their joint resolution, the&#13;<br \/>\nelders said Mt Kenya East had for decades supported leaders from Mt Kenya West&#13;<br \/>\nand that the time had come for the western side to reciprocate by backing&#13;<br \/>\nKindiki. <\/p>\n<p>They also mandated their councils to&#13;<br \/>\nengage Mt Kenya West elders, including Kiama Kia Ma, in efforts to establish a&#13;<br \/>\ncommon political position. <\/p>\n<p>But the Kirinyaga elders said the&#13;<br \/>\nEmbu declaration could not be used to determine the political identity or&#13;<br \/>\ndirection of their county without consulting residents.<\/p>\n<p>Warutere said Kirinyaga had elected&#13;<br \/>\nleaders mandated to represent its people and warned against turning the county&#13;<br \/>\nand the wider Mt Kenya region into political instruments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe as elders and the people of&#13;<br \/>\nKirinyaga stand firm in denying this. We refuse to be included in someone who&#13;<br \/>\nis seeking a political lifeline using us. We are part of one region, Mt Kenya,&#13;<br \/>\nand we speak in one voice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The elders also rejected attempts to&#13;<br \/>\nclassify areas such as Mwea and Gichugu as part of a separate Mt Kenya East&#13;<br \/>\npolitical bloc, insisting that Kirinyaga remained part of the wider Mt Kenya&#13;<br \/>\nregion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/de8561f8-17cc-4c2b-b21b-1fb81cc1e967.webp\" style=\"max-width: 100%; width: 100%;\"\/>Members of Kiama Kia Ma council of elders during a meeting in Kirinyaga county on August 17, 2026\/ ALICE WAITHERA<\/p>\n<p>John Gathungu, another elder, said&#13;<br \/>\npolitical pronouncements could not redefine the county\u2019s identity or determine&#13;<br \/>\nwho should speak for its residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to tell those people trying&#13;<br \/>\nto classify us as Mt Kenya East that Kirinyaga starts from River Sagana to&#13;<br \/>\nRiver Rupingazi. They have no authority to speak on our behalf on matters of politics,\u201d Gathungu said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Kirinyaga had elected leaders&#13;<br \/>\nfrom the governor to MPs and MCAs who had the mandate to represent residents,&#13;<br \/>\nadding that political decisions affecting the county should not be made by&#13;<br \/>\nindividuals without the people\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n<p>Gathungu said the proposed division&#13;<br \/>\nalso went against the historical ties that brought the Gikuyu, Embu and Meru&#13;<br \/>\ncommunities together under GEMA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn matters of Mt. Kenya East and West,&#13;<br \/>\nwe as elders want to remind them that our ancestors brought Gikuyu, Embu and&#13;<br \/>\nMeru together to form GEMA, and that is what we the people from Mt Kenya, recognise.
