{"id":384455,"date":"2026-08-18T20:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/384455\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T20:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:14:13","slug":"death-toll-from-zimbabwe-ferry-disaster-reaches-94","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/384455\/","title":{"rendered":"Death toll from Zimbabwe ferry disaster reaches 94"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> A government-owned ferry that capsized on Zimbabwe\u2019s Lake Kariba last week was carrying around 180 passengers\u2014twice the stated capacity\u2014as the death toll rose to 94, the government said Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>State-controlled newspaper\u00a0The Herald\u00a0said it was the deadliest transport disaster in the Southern African country&#8217;s history, surpassing a 1991 bus crash that claimed 89 lives, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trtworld.com\/article\/9f4fb9e55165\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TRT World<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The boat was travelling from the town of Kariba in northern <a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/news\/death-toll-from-zimbabwean-boat-capsize-rises-to-72\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zimbabwe<\/a> to a remote rural community on the lake when it capsized after being struck by strong waves.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry was only meant to carry 90 passengers, police said last week.
