A U.S. federal judge has cleared <\/a>the way for the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Cameroon, Ethiopia<\/a>, Somalia and South Sudan living, as part of a wider rollback of the humanitarian immigration programme.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For affected nationals without another valid immigration status, the loss of TPS could mean the end of protection from deportation and the loss of employment authorisation. The move marks a further rollback of the humanitarian immigration programme that has allowed eligible foreign nationals to remain and work legally in the face of conditions in their home countries.<\/p>\n

TPS is a temporary humanitarian protection that allows eligible nationals of designated countries who are already in the US to remain in the country when conditions such as armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary circumstances prevent their safe return.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump has expanded United\u00a0 States\u00a0travel restrictions\u00a0<\/a>to include an additional 15 countries, most of them in Africa,\u00a0in a move that is set to further strain U.S.-Africa relations and disrupt travel, education, and business links across the continent. As of January,\u00a0nationals from 36 of Africa’s 54 countries are subject to visa constraints – 12 are barred from receiving most visas and 24 face heightened<\/p>\n

The United States\u00a0government has ordered<\/a> the affected individuals to leave within 60 days or face arrest and deportation. The decision affects about 5,000 people who had fled armed conflict, and is part of a broader effort<\/p>\n
