Others include Olando, Mine Nyalo, Arombe, Rapogi and Join Hands.

The organisation provides cheap loans to legally registered women’s groups. The money allows members to start or expand small businesses while strengthening their household incomes.

For many of the women, the opportunity is particularly important because they are widows carrying the burden of raising families alone.

A small business can therefore be the difference between dependence and dignity.

But Hitaji’s intervention does not stop at money.

The organisation has introduced football into its programmes, giving women balls and jerseys and encouraging them to participate in women’s football.

On the pitch, the women find more than exercise.

They find companionship, confidence and an opportunity to talk about issues affecting their health and families.

The organisation also runs public health programmes focusing on sexual and reproductive health, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS awareness among women and girls.

Yet perhaps its most profound intervention is in education.

Hitaji is currently supporting 15 secondary school students and five girls pursuing university programmes.

Another 20 beneficiaries have already completed their studies and entered different sectors of the economy.

For Form Three student Akinyi Nyamiro, education had once seemed like a dream that was slipping away.

Akinyi, a student at Sota SDA Secondary School, had completed primary school at Oruba Primary School in Migori town.

She was bright.

But her family could not afford to keep all the children in school.

As the fourth-born in a family where her siblings were also pursuing their education, Akinyi feared she would be the one forced to stop.

Then Hitaji stepped in.

The organisation identified her as a bright but needy student and began supporting her from Form Two.

School fees were paid.

School requirements were provided.

And the possibility of completing her education returned.

“It looked like the end of the road for me,” Akinyi says

Today, she is back on the road.

Kenya, 21 August 2026 –
