Clever engineering moved H2O so efficiently that farmers were able to churn out huge surpluses of staple crops like wheat, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/55467746\/Feeding_an_Empire_Why_Egyptian_grains_played_a_key_role_in_the_food_provisioning_of_the_Roman_Empire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fed the Roman Empire<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands of years later, the African nation\u2019s farmers \u2014 like so many others around the world \u2014 are grappling with water shortages and ever-fiercer temperatures, which threaten to wilt their crops. So like their ancestors before them, they\u2019re innovating, this time with a burgeoning technique known as agrivoltaics: By covering fields with solar panels, farmers generate clean electricity and shade crops, reducing evaporation and mitigating heat stress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Two pilot projects in Egypt \u2014 from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3e.eu\/resources\/news\/advancing-agrivoltaics-in-egypt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">variety of funders and partnering organizations<\/a> \u2014 are testing how the technology might fare in small farming communities and on a larger scale in the country. \u201cThere is no perfect guideline on how to get there, so I imagine many projects like ours will be trying out different things,\u201d said Gofran Chowdhury, head of innovation at the renewable energy company 3E, one of the partners in the campaign.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/egypt-heat.jpg\"   alt=\"Solar panel standing in a field\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Maged El-Said\"\/>Maged El-Said<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers around the world are finding that instead of solar panels stopping plants from flourishing, what with all that shade, they can supercharge growth. Many plants evolved to grow in the dappled light of the forest floor, for instance, and struggle under full sun. The partner groups and farmers in Egypt are experimenting with different arrangements of panels, like a checkerboard, as shown above. This doesn\u2019t generate as much electricity as a sprawling solar farm, with row after row of solid panels with few gaps, but it lets more sunlight reach the crops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the panels\u2019 shade reduces water loss from the soil. Other researchers in the deserts of Nevada have found that this hydrological protection <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/energy\/solar-farms-can-be-havens-for-rare-plants-just-ask-the-threecorner-milkvetch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">helps a rare plant there thrive<\/a>. And up in Colorado, scientists are growing crops on rooftops under panels, finding that this uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-ultra-efficient-farm-of-the-future-is-in-the-sky\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a third as much water<\/a> than if the plants weren\u2019t shaded. (Agrivoltaics also provides relief from the relentless amount of sun on a rooftop, and shields the plants from high winds up there.) They\u2019re also experimenting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-28484-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transparent solar panels<\/a>, which let light through while still producing power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Really, every crop is going to have different needs, hence the variety of projects in Egypt and beyond. Early results from experiments are promising: On those Colorado rooftops, cucumbers are <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/cities\/how-urban-farms-can-make-cities-more-livable-and-help-feed-america\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing to the size of baseball bats<\/a>. Not that anyone is going to force Egyptian farmers to grow cucumbers \u2014 they\u2019ll keep cultivating what they\u2019ve always cultivated. \u201cWe want to adapt and see what is the community doing right now,\u201d Chowdhury said, \u201cand trying to see if we can support them with that adaptation.\u201d All the while, the program\u2019s organizers will collect data on the performance of plants and panels, which will inform how to deploy agrivoltaics elsewhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/egypt-agrovoltaics-heat.jpg\"   alt=\"Man inspecting plant in a field\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Maged El-Said\"\/>Maged El-Said<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">Maged El-Said, founder of Habiba Community, which runs a regenerative farm in South Sinai, said that it\u2019s still too early to tell what crops will do best under the panels installed in May. But one early candidate seems to be watermelon. \u201cHonestly, it\u2019s growing well for the first time,\u201d El-Said said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-default-font-family wp-block-paragraph\">The community will also have to decide what model works best as they decide if farms should adopt agrivoltaics individually, or band together in groups. There\u2019s also the question of who should get the clean electricity, and what it should be used for. For now, it\u2019s helping run irrigation equipment, but could also potentially power desalination plants for purifying the region\u2019s brackish water. With that additional H2O, more places could support agriculture and agrivoltaics \u2014 a self-reinforcing cycle.
