Zimbabwe&#8217;s ruling ZANU-PF party plans to amend the constitution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s term by two years to 2030, a move opposition politicians have condemned as unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal, adopted at a party conference late on Saturday, would prolong the 83-year-old president\u2019s second five-year term, currently set to end in 2028.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"promo-box\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__dark-grey__UFC18 text-module__regular__qJJtA text-module__small__sph8i body-module__base__o--Cl body-module__small_body__gOmDf article-body-module__promo-box__hVl8h\"> Sign up  <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/zimbabwes-ruling-party-resolves-extend-presidents-term-2030-2025-10-19\/undefined?location=article-paragraph&amp;redirectUrl=%2Fworld%2Fafrica%2Fzimbabwes-ruling-party-resolves-extend-presidents-term-2030-2025-10-19%2F\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The resolution comes amid a succession battle within ZANU-PF, where Mnangagwa\u2019s main internal rival, former army general Constantino Chiwenga, has been accused of treasonous acts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The party and government are therefore directed to initiate the requisite legislative amendments to give full effect to this resolution to ensure continuity, stability and the sustained transformation of the nation,&#8221; Ziyambi Ziyambi, ZANU-PF secretary for legal affairs and Minister of Justice, told delegates.<\/p>\n<p>Jameson Timba, a veteran politician and senior leader in a fractured opposition movement, said that Zimbabwe should not be governed by conference resolutions or partisan directives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are a constitutional democracy and the supremacy of the Constitution must remain non-negotiable,&#8221; he said in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Timba called for formal clarification from the speaker of parliament and the minister of justice, and urged &#8220;civic vigilance and peaceful defence&#8221; of constitutionalism.<\/p>\n<p>Mnangagwa, who has previously said he is not interested in clinging to power, came to office in a 2017 military coup that ousted founding leader Robert Mugabe.<\/p>\n<p>The constitution requires him to step down in 2028 after serving two five-year terms.<\/p>\n<p>ZANU-PF has ruled the Southern African nation since independence from Britain in 1980 and holds a commanding majority in parliament as the government tries to <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/imf-lauds-zimbabwes-economic-progress-says-arrears-block-lending-2025-10-16\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rebuild<\/a> a weak economy and reduce crippling <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/zimbabwe-says-gold-backed-currency-stable-investor-doubts-persist-2025-06-17\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debt obligations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is going to be the biggest challenge to the democratic forces in the nation on how we are going to respond to this huge provocation by a political party whose modus of operation has always been predatory,&#8221;
