(Light Oriye Tamunotonye\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Locals said the assault followed earlier raids in neighboring villages, including Agwarra and Borgu, that began Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Dauda Shakulle, who was wounded while fleeing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/least-30-killed-nigeria-market-attack-police-say-2026-01-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told Reuters<\/a> that not even women or children were spared.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There has been no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/crime\/police-and-law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">presence of security forces<\/a> since the attacks began. (Sunday Alamba\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>The attack comes amid a wave of mass kidnappings across Nigeria in recent months, including the abduction of 25 girls from a boarding school in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/armed-attackers-nigeria-kidnap-25-girls-from-boarding-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Kebbi State<\/a> in November and the seizure of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/number-children-abducted-from-catholic-school-nigeria-explodes-over-300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">300 children<\/a> and 12 teachers from St. Mary\u2019s Private Catholic School in Niger state.<\/p>\n<p>The Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA), a Catholic religious congregation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/africa\/news\/2026-01\/nigeria-your-compassion-became-a-lifeline-the-gratitude-of-th.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">later confirmed<\/a> that all those abducted from the school have since been safely released.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From the first hours of the abduction, the OLA family\u2014together with the local Church in the Diocese of Kontagora, the families of Papiri, and communities across Nigeria\u2014was upheld by a remarkable global solidarity of prayer and advocacy.
