Ian Cameron soek antwoorde by Western Cape police over claims that cameras which were donated to SAPS to monitor major routes were blykbaar switched off during the deadly Du Noon mob justice attack.<\/p>\n
Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police chairman hou dik that the cameras allegedly had a direct line of sight of the area where four men were brutally killed and their bodies set alight on Sunday, 23 August.<\/p>\n
The charred remains were discovered lying metres apart on an open field near the N7 off-ramp on Malibongwe Drive.<\/p>\n
Police said the victims were burnt beyond recognition, making it impossible to identify them at the scene.<\/p>\n
According to police, tyres were used to set the men alight.<\/p>\n
The circumstances surrounding the murders and the motive remain under investigation, while residents have alleged that the men were targeted in an apparent mob justice attack.<\/p>\n
No arrests have been made.<\/p>\n
Cameron has now raised further questions about the alleged failure of the surveillance cameras.<\/p>\n
In a video posted online, he claims the cameras were donated to SAPS by SANRAL and should have been available to assist members responding to incidents along major routes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose cameras, donated to SAPS free of charge, have direct line of sight of exactly where those four people were burned to death,\u201d Cameron said.<\/p>\n
He claims SAPS management told him that members on the ground had not followed the required \u201cred tape process\u201d to access the camera feeds.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, SAPS management maintains that the members on the ground did not follow the right so-called \u2018red tape process\u2019 to get access to those cameras and they have switched off the screens.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cameron said the alleged lack of access could have had deadly consequences.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf those screens were on, those members could potentially have stopped what happened next to the N7. Four lives could have been saved and potentially other criminals could have been arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said police and other emergency services could potentially have been dispatched to the scene while the attack was still unfolding.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe relevant authorities could have been dispatched. But, unfortunately, once again due to a strange way of running a bureaucratic police service, they have not been able to stop anyone from being killed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Daily Voice has asked SAPS to respond to Cameron\u2019s allegations regarding the SANRAL-donated cameras, including whether the cameras were operational on the day of the killings, whether officers attempted to access the footage and whether any footage from the area is available to investigators.<\/p>\n
At the time of publication, SAPS had not responded to Daily Voice\u2019s enquiry.<\/p>\n
