{"id":4098,"date":"2026-01-05T02:54:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T02:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/4098\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T02:54:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T02:54:08","slug":"at-least-30-killed-in-nigeria-market-attack-police-say-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/4098\/","title":{"rendered":"At least 30 killed in Nigeria market attack, police say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">At least 30 people were killed and several others abducted when gunmen attacked a market in Nigeria\u2019s Niger State, police said on \u200dSunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Police \u200bspokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said the gunmen, locally called bandits, stormed Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, burning stalls and looting food items.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cOver 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, \u2060and some persons were also kidnapped. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims,\u201d Mr. Abiodun said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Witnesses said the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately. They said the violence was part of a series of \u200craids that began \u200don Friday in the nearby villages of Agwarra and Borgu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWomen and \u200dchildren were not spared,\u201d said Dauda \u200cShakulle, who was wounded while fleeing. \u201cThere has been no \u2060presence of security forces since the attacks began. We are currently recovering corpses.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Nigerian \u200bPresident Bola Tinubu on Sunday said that he has directed the authorities to hunt down the perpetrators behind the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI have also directed that all abducted victims be urgently rescued and that security operations around vulnerable communities, \u200bespecially near forests, be intensified,\u201d Mr. Tinubu said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Nigerian military did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The attack came weeks after gunmen seized more than 300 children and staff of a Catholic school in the state in central Nigeria. Those victims were released \u2060after nearly a month in captivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Such banditry has escalated \u2060across northwestern and central Nigeria, with armed groups carrying out mass killings and kidnappings in \u200crural communities. Security forces have struggled to contain the violence despite continuing operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Witness Khalid Pissa said the gunmen attacked communities in Kasuwan Daji and also in nearby Chukama and Shanga.
