Johannesburg motorists have been urged to avoid parts of Doornfontein after multiple vehicles became submerged and trapped in floodwater at the Siemert Road and Currey Street intersection on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department<\/a> (JMPD) said officers were at the scene managing traffic, assisting stranded motorists and diverting vehicles away from the flooded road.<\/p>\n JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said persistent heavy rainfall had resulted in dangerous driving conditions across the city.<\/p>\n \u201cCurrently, localised flooding has been reported at Siemert Road and Currey Street, Doornfontein.<\/p>\n ”Multiple vehicles have become submerged and stuck in high water at this location,\u201d Fihla said.<\/p>\n Motorists urged to avoid flooded area<\/p>\n Fihla said motorists travelling towards the affected area were being diverted onto alternative routes and urged them to avoid the area entirely where possible.<\/p>\n The JMPD warned motorists against attempting to drive through submerged roads or areas with high-standing water.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you encounter submerged roads or high standing water, turn around immediately. Stalled vehicles block emergency response access and present severe safety hazards,\u201d Fihla said.<\/p>\n Motorists have also been urged to drive well below the speed limit, maintain a greater following distance and keep their headlights switched on.<\/p>\n ”Follow all temporary barracades, road closure, and instructions from JMPD officers directing traffic on site,” said Fihla.\u00a0<\/p>\n The JMPD said road users who encounter stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions or rising water levels should report them to the City of Johannesburg\u2019s Emergency Call Centre.<\/p>\n The emergency number is 011 375 5911.<\/p>\n hope.ntanzi.iol.co.za<\/p>\n IOL News\u00a0<\/p>\n Get your news on the go.
