The South African rand slipped on Friday but hovered near the 16-per-dollar level as traders looked ahead to next week&#8217;s interest rate decision for signals on the central bank&#8217;s policy stance.<\/p>\n<p>At 1449 GMT, the rand traded at 16.1825 per dollar \u202f, roughly down 0.3% on Thursday&#8217;s close but still near its strongest level since June 2022.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"promo-box\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__dark-grey__UFC18 text-module__regular__qJJtA text-module__small__sph8i body-module__base__o--Cl body-module__small_body__gOmDf article-body-module__promo-box__hVl8h\"> Sign up  <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/south-african-rand-edges-up-traders-eye-interest-rate-decision-next-week-2026-01-23\/undefined?location=article-paragraph&amp;redirectUrl=%2Fworld%2Fafrica%2Fsouth-african-rand-edges-up-traders-eye-interest-rate-decision-next-week-2026-01-23%2F\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The currency has been supported by record-high gold prices, improved fiscal indicators, a credible central bank and sustained dollar weakness, said Citadel Global director Bianca Botes in a note.<\/p>\n<p>The risk-sensitive rand, which often tracks major global drivers such as U.S. policy, has gained more than 2% against the dollar since the start of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A test of 16.00 per dollar appears plausible, should gold hold above $4,800 an ounce and dollar weakness persist,&#8221;
