{"id":417021,"date":"2026-09-09T00:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T00:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/417021\/"},"modified":"2026-09-09T00:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T00:06:09","slug":"man-abandons-bail-after-court-appearance-over-fatal-spring-day-stabbing-in-refilwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/417021\/","title":{"rendered":"Man abandons bail after court appearance over fatal Spring Day stabbing in Refilwe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 53-year-old Gauteng man accused of<a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/news\/opinion\/2026-09-04-spring-day-terror-its-difficult-to-say-rest-in-peace-tshepang-nyathi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> fatally stabbing a man during Spring Day celebrations<\/a> in Refilwe has abandoned his bail application at the Cullinan Magistrate&#8217;s Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The man is accused of killing 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi on September 1, 2026, in Refilwe Extension 3.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the incident, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said a group of young people had gathered to celebrate Spring Day by pouring water on one another and on passersby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While the accused was walking past, it is alleged that the group attempted to pour water on him. He allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the deceased. The deceased was taken to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The accused was arrested later that same day at Ekangala Hospital, where he had sought medical treatment after being apprehended and assaulted by members of the community following the alleged stabbing.<\/p>\n<p>The matter was postponed to October 27, 2026, for further police investigations.<\/p>\n<p>The NPA has not disclosed the man&#8217;s identity, however, according to reports, the man is Nyathi\u2019s neighbour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iol.co.za\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection\" class=\"__cf_email__\" data-cfemail=\"9be8f2f5fef5f3f7faf5f3f7fab5f6fae8f2f7fef7fadbf2f4f7b5f8f4b5e1fa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[email\u00a0protected]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>IOL News<\/p>\n<p>Get your news on the go.
