{"id":4546,"date":"2026-01-05T08:17:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T08:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/4546\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T08:17:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T08:17:12","slug":"indias-modi-visits-ethiopia-and-calls-for-renewed-bilateral-relations-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/4546\/","title":{"rendered":"India&#8217;s Modi visits Ethiopia and calls for renewed bilateral relations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) \u2014 The Indian prime minister called for a strategic relationship with Ethiopia Wednesday during his first visit to the country, one of Africa\u2019s most populous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Global South is writing its own destiny, and India and Ethiopia share a vision for it,\u201d Prime Minister Narendra Modi told parliamentarians during a special address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur vision is of a world where the Global South rises not against anyone, but for everyone; a world where development is fair, where technology is accessible, and where sovereignty is respected,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders signed a number of memorandums of understanding and promised to cooperate on the training of United Nations peacekeepers, education, and the establishment of a data center at Ethiopia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They also pledged to help Ethiopia navigate its mounting international debt under the G20 Common Framework and to combat terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Modi was on Tuesday conferred with Ethiopia\u2019s highest civilian honor, the \u201cGreat Honor Nishan Ethiopia,\u201d by his Ethiopian counterpart, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. India is set to host the 18th BRICS summit next year.<\/p>\n<p>The Ethiopian government has been looking for new partners as its relationship with the United States wanes.
