{"id":4737,"date":"2026-01-05T10:06:49","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T10:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/4737\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T10:06:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T10:06:49","slug":"us-pauses-most-visa-applications-from-zimbabwe-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/4737\/","title":{"rendered":"US pauses most visa applications from Zimbabwe | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The announcement marks the latest restriction imposed by the Trump administration on travellers from Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 8 Aug 20258 Aug 2025<\/p>\n<p>Click here to share on social media<\/p>\n<p>share2<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-share__social-text\">Share<\/p>\n<p>The United States has announced a pause on all routine visa applications for citizens of Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department said in a statement on Thursday that the US embassy in Zimbabwe would pause all routine visa services starting from Friday \u201cwhile we address concerns with the Government of Zimbabwe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>The embassy described the measure as temporary and part of the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to \u201cprevent visa overstay and misuse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Most diplomatic and official visas would be exempt from the pause, the US said.<\/p>\n<p>The US has enforced new travel restrictions on citizens from several African countries under President Donald Trump\u2019s broader immigration enforcement policies.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the US put in place travel bans on citizens from 12 countries, seven of them in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>It increased restrictions on seven other nations, three of them African.<\/p>\n<p>The US has also demanded that 36 countries, the majority of them in Africa, improve their vetting of travellers or face a ban on their citizens visiting the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia were all on that list of 36 countries asked to improve their citizens\u2019 travel documentation and take steps to address the status of their nationals who are in the US illegally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump Administration is protecting our nation and our citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process,\u201d the US State Department said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came days after the US unveiled a pilot project requiring citizens of two other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/20\/is-trump-planning-an-africa-visa-ban\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">African<\/a> countries, Malawi and Zambia, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/5\/tourists-from-malawi-and-zambia-are-first-to-face-15000-visa-bonds-in-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pay<\/a> a bond of up to $15,000 for tourist or business visas.<\/p>\n<p>The bond will be forfeited if the applicant stays in the US after their visa expires.<\/p>\n<p>The new bond policy announced on Tuesday requires Malawians and Zambians to pay bonds of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 as part of their application for a tourist or business visa to the US.<\/p>\n<p>Under the programme, citizens of those countries must also arrive and depart at one of three airports: Boston\u2019s Logan International Airport, New York\u2019s John F Kennedy International Airport or Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>The visa bond pilot programme will start on August 20, the State Department said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The announcement marks the latest restriction imposed by the Trump administration on travellers from Africa.
