{"id":5050,"date":"2026-01-05T13:10:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T13:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/5050\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T13:10:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T13:10:06","slug":"afar-diaspora-conference-djiboutian-regime-playing-detrimental-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/5050\/","title":{"rendered":"Afar Diaspora Conference :\u00a0 &#8220;Djiboutian regime&#8221; playing &#8220;detrimental role&#8221;\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Afar-Diaspora-Conference-2.jpg\" alt=\"Afar Diaspora Conference Brussles _ Djibouti \" class=\"wp-image-77100 lazyload\"\/><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Afar-Diaspora-Conference-2.jpg\" alt=\"Afar Diaspora Conference Brussles _ Djibouti \" class=\"wp-image-77100 lazyload\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Borkena<\/p>\n<p>Toronto \u2013 The Afar Diaspora Conference calls for actors \u2013 including state actors present in Djibouti \u2013 to address what it called \u201cdetrimental role played by the Djiboutian regime in the internal affairs\u00a0 and conflicts of neighbouring countries.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The call is one of the resolutions adopted at the end of the three days conference convened in Brussels, Belgium\u00a0 under the auspices of the International Federation of Afar Diaspora (FIDA).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In February 2025, Borkena reported about the Djibouti<a href=\"https:\/\/borkena.com\/2025\/02\/03\/ethiopia-reports-confirms-djibouti-drone-attack-kills-eight-in-afar\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> government <\/a>drone strike in the Afar region of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government did not remark on it at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There were also reports of rights violations by the Djibouti government particularly targeting Afars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The statement from conference organizers sent to Borkena indicates the conference discussed humanitarian, political and security challenges Afar communities face in Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as rising tension in the region were discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Afar diaspora representatives, civil society actors, politicians, and academics\u00a0 attended the event, it was said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also, the conference\u00a0 covered other topics including \u201cland grabbing\u201d and \u201csystemic human rights violations.\u201d They were described as\u00a0 \u201cconcerning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Conference expressed serious concern over the disproportionate impact of armed conflict, forced displacement, land grabbing, and systematic human rights violations affecting Afar civilians,\u201d it reads.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the humanitarian situation is concerned, the conference called for \u201cunhindered humanitarian access\u201d to the areas impacted by conflict.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It urged the African Union, IGAD, the United Nations and the European Union to step up diplomatic and humanitarian engagement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Afar region of Ethiopia was one of the areas severely devastated by the bloody two years war between TPLF led Tigray administration and the Ethiopian Federal government which ended in November 2022 with the signing of the<a href=\"https:\/\/borkena.com\/?s=+Pretoria+Agreement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Pretoria Agreement.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the \u201cParticipants reaffirmed the unity and solidarity of the Afar people across borders, while underscoring full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states in the Horn of Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Afar-Issa conflict \u2013 with a recurring history of bloody skirmishes \u2013 was also discussed at the conference. It called on the \u201d Ethiopian federal government to pursue durable solutions to the Afar\u2013Issa conflict through fair and transparent boundary delimitation and urged regional actors to refrain from actions that exacerbate instability.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The conference has adopted a 14 points resolution.
