{"id":6273,"date":"2026-01-06T02:24:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T02:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/6273\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T02:24:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T02:24:11","slug":"central-africa-republic-president-faustin-archange-touadera-reelected-provisional-results-show-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/6273\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Africa Republic President Faustin Archange Touad\u00e9ra reelected, provisional results show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">BANGUI-MOTABA \u2013 Central Africa Republic President Faustin Archange Touad\u00e9ra won a third term <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/central-african-republic-federal-regional-elections-russia-ec71c086b3058bb7fcb2c3c16c886afc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in last month&#8217;s election<\/a>, provisional results showed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The major opposition coalition boycotted the vote after a referendum allowed the removal of term limits. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Touad\u00e9ra, 68, faced challenges from six candidates, but the main opposition coalition did not participate after denouncing what it called an unequal political environment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He won 76.15% of the votes, according to the provisional results the election authority released late Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Some 2.4 million Central Africans were registered to vote in a first-of-its-kind election in the country, where citizens voted simultaneously for all tiers of government, including presidential, legislative, regional and municipal seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Two opposition candidates have already contested the results, citing instances of alleged malpractice by the National Elections Authority and widespread fraud. Anicet Georges Dologu\u00e9l\u00e9, the runner-up who received 14.66% of the vote, proclaimed himself the winner of the election on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Analysts say Touad\u00e9ra has consolidated power within state institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The country has been embroiled in conflict since 2013 after mostly Muslim rebels seized power and forced then-President Fran\u00e7ois Boziz\u00e9 out of office. The conflict was de-escalated by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/a250380046554b6cb0bbf6feb1510786\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 2019 peace<\/a> deal between the government and 14 armed groups. Six of the 14 groups later withdrew from the agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Central Africa Republic is one of the countries where Wagner, a Russian mercenary group, was first active in Africa. The group has been responsible for Touad\u00e9ra&#8217;s security, but tensions have grown between Touad\u00e9ra and Russia after Moscow demanded that Wagner be replaced with the Russian government-run <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/central-african-republic-russia-wagner-africa-corps-b9e4078548ceda4bbe8b70eb821d5a87\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">African Corps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Regional power Rwanda also plays an influential role in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Security issues ranked high among voters\u2019 concerns in the election, even though the crisis has dwindled.
