Photo by Glenn Russell\/VTDigger<\/p>\n<p>Steven Tendo, a Ugandan minister and nursing assistant <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2022\/11\/11\/a-death-sentence-deportation-looms-for-ugandan-refugee-living-in-colchester\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who moved to Vermont in 2021 while seeking asylum<\/a>, was detained in Shelburne on Wednesday morning by federal immigration agents, according to the union he\u2019s a part of and the advocacy group Migrant Justice.<\/p>\n<p>Tendo was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement outside a health care facility where he works, said Will Lambek, an organizer with Migrant Justice, and Tendo\u2019s union, UVMMC Support Staff United. It was not immediately clear whether Tendo\u2019s detention was related to the timing of that check-in. Tendo was detained \u201cwithout crime being committed,\u201d the union wrote in a social media post Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tendo fled his native country in 2018 and applied for asylum protection in the U.S. He fought his case in the immigration court system for years, though his application was ultimately denied, meaning federal officials could remove him from the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Uganda, Tendo was brutally tortured and members of his family were killed because government forces there viewed an advocacy organization he founded as a political threat, according to U.S. federal court records and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2021\/02\/the-almost-unbelievable-tortures-of-steven-tendo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tendo\u2019s own past accounts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has described being returned to Uganda as \u201ca death sentence.\u201d Tendo\u2019s plight has drawn support in recent years from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/amr51\/2627\/2020\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international human rights groups<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/blog\/44-members-of-congress-urge-dhs-to-free-pastor-steven\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dozens of members of Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tendo was nearly deported while in ICE custody in Texas in 2020, though the agency granted him a reprieve amid pressure from advocates and members of Congress, later releasing him in early 2021 on a condition called humanitarian parole.
