The Director of Criminal
\nInvestigations, Mohamed Amin, has pledged a robust and uncompromising
\napproach to combating drug and substance abuse in Kenya.<\/p>\n
Wrapping up a security assessment
\ntour in Marsabit county, he\u00a0announced plans to strengthen the DCI\u2019s Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) with advanced tools, intelligence capabilities and forensic resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to heighten our
\noperations on the drug menace in the country,” Amin said, describing substance abuse as a profound threat to national development and security.<\/p>\n
“We use this opportunity to warn
\nthe barons and consumers at large.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amin said collective action is urgently needed to protect communities, particularly young people, from the devastating effects of alcohol and drug abuse.<\/p>\n
He called for stronger collaboration between communities and police, while warning that law enforcement officers complicit in illicit networks will face strict consequences.<\/p>\n
The DCI director commended officers
\nfor their dedication, while emphasising the role of local communities in
\nidentifying and dismantling drug networks.<\/p>\n
Marsabit, he said, is among the leading drug trafficking routes in the country.<\/p>\n
He directed police commanders
\nnationwide to take decisive action against sellers, traffickers and
\ndistributors of illicit substances. <\/p>\n
Amin also warned that any government
\nofficial or police officer found protecting or enabling drug networks will be
\nheld fully accountable, stressing that no one is above the law in this critical
\nfight.<\/p>\n
During the tour, Amin visited
\nseveral police stations, assessed operational readiness and engaged directly
\nwith officers and local residents to boost morale and foster collaboration. <\/p>\n
His remarks come on the heels of
\nsimilar warnings from Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, who
\ndeclared 2026 a decisive year in the fight against drug and substance abuse. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the year we are liberating
\nour youth from the yoke of drug and substance abuse. I am telling the major
\ndistributors of drugs and adulterated ethanol that your days are over,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The CS further announced plans to
\nmeet the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to operationalise
\nPresident William Ruto\u2019s directive to strengthen the Anti-Narcotics Unit with
\nan additional 500 officers. <\/p>\n
He called on county governments to
\nestablish at least one rehabilitation centre in every county to support
\nrecovery and reintegration for individuals affected by alcohol and drug abuse.<\/p>\n
Ruto, in his New Year
\naddress from Eldoret State Lodge, declared alcohol and drug abuse a national
\nemergency that threatens public health, national security, productivity and
\nthe social fabric of the country. <\/p>\n
He highlighted alarming statistics
\nshowing that one in six Kenyans aged 15-65 uses at least one substance of
\nabuse, with more than 4.7 million people affected, noting that initiation into
\nharmful use often begins in the teenage years.<\/p>\n
To tackle the crisis, the government
\nplans to expand the ANU from 200 to 700 officers, equipping the unit with
\nmodern surveillance, intelligence, forensic and financial investigation tools.
\n<\/p>\n
The unit will target high-level drug
\ntraffickers and illicit alcohol networks, with asset tracing, seizure and
\nforfeiture playing a central role. <\/p>\n
Recovered assets will be redirected
\ntoward prevention, rehabilitation and treatment programmes. <\/p>\n
Ruto warned that any government
\nofficial or security officer found colluding with traffickers will be
\nprosecuted and dismissed from service.<\/p>\n
Over the past three months,
\nauthorities have mounted nationwide operations targeting drugs and illicit
\nalcohol, resulting in arrests and the destruction of tonnes of seized substances.
\n<\/p>\n
With these measures, the government
\nsignals a comprehensive, multi-agency approach to curbing substance abuse and
