{"id":788,"date":"2026-01-03T17:06:57","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T17:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/788\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T17:06:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T17:06:57","slug":"zimbabwean-born-entrepreneur-uses-ai-to-tackle-africas-road-safety-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/788\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwean-Born Entrepreneur Uses AI to Tackle Africa&#8217;s Road Safety Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">A Zimbabwean-born technology entrepreneur is developing artificial intelligence systems aimed at making African roads safer by predicting risks before accidents happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"30\">Founder of RoadMind AI, Tendai Joe is leading the project from Cape Town where his company is building data-driven tools that analyse road surfaces, identify hazards and anticipate potential accidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"23\">Unlike traditional road safety approaches that respond after incidents occur, RoadMind AI&#8217;s technology is designed to support proactive urban planning and infrastructure management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"23\">The systems are intended to provide insights for fleet operators, insurers and government agencies helping them make informed decisions to reduce road-related risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Follow us on <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VaIdDi8Bqbr263erhw1K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/allafrica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> for the latest headlines<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"26\">Joe who has lived and worked in both Zimbabwe and South Africa says he deliberately chose to build his career on the continent despite opportunities elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"9\">&#8220;I wanted to contribute something meaningful here,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"14\">RoadMind AI was launched earlier this year and quickly assembled a multidisciplinary engineering team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"24\">Among them is Athenkosi Nzala, the company&#8217;s co-founder and chief technology officer, a civil engineer with a PhD from the University of Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"24\">The team also includes AI specialists, cloud engineers and automotive systems experts some of whom have previously worked with global manufacturers such as BMW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"30\">The company has already developed a minimum viable product and is now working on its first AI-powered data-capturing hardware which will be used to gather real-time information from road networks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"19\">Initial research and design surveys have been conducted in Pretoria and Cape Town focusing on specific road user groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"10\">The studies recorded full voluntary participation according to the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"19\">Further expansion into Johannesburg and Durban is planned forming the basis for prototype testing before a broader continental rollout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"12\">Joe&#8217;s work has attracted recognition within the technology sector over several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"31\">In 2020, he partnered with the University of Johannesburg to share knowledge on artificial intelligence while in 2012 he collaborated with Intel on emerging technologies which described him as a pioneer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"15\">He has also tested devices and applications for companies including Samsung, Huawei, LG and Nedbank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"27\">With more than a decade of professional experience, Joe says African-led innovation has a critical role to play in shaping public policy, urban planning and infrastructure development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"29\">&#8220;Technology should anticipate problems before they happen.
