{"id":8154,"date":"2026-01-06T23:28:56","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T23:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/8154\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T23:28:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T23:28:56","slug":"22-ethiopian-migrants-killed-in-lorry-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/8154\/","title":{"rendered":"22 Ethiopian migrants killed in lorry crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Addis Ababa: At least 22 Ethiopian migrants were killed and more than 60 injured after a lorry they were travelling in overturned in the country&#8217;s northern Afar region, local authorities said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia is one of the main departure points for the &#8220;Eastern Route&#8221; by which people migrating leave the Horn of Africa in search of work in wealthy Gulf countries.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of African migrants take the route across the Red Sea, mostly from Djibouti to Yemen in search of work as labourers or domestic workers.<\/p>\n<p>The accident occurred early Tuesday in Semera in the Afar region, several hundred kilometres west of Djibouti.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The accident happened when a lorry overturned which had crowded in citizens who were misled by illegal brokers and didn&#8217;t understand the travel route&#8217;s danger,&#8221; regional authorities said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>There were 22 deaths and 65 injuries, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>A photo published on the Afar authorities&#8217; Facebook page showed an overturned truck, its passenger compartment and rear section destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia is Africa&#8217;s second most populous country with some 130 million inhabitants, and more than 40 percent live below the poverty line according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>There were 890 deaths and disappearances along the Eastern Route between January and September 2025, according to the International Organization for Migration &#8212; more than double the 421 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Addis Ababa: At least 22 Ethiopian migrants were killed and more than 60 injured after a lorry they&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":8155,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25],"tags":[65,1297,1296],"class_list":{"0":"post-8154","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ethiopia","8":"tag-ethiopia","9":"tag-qatar","10":"tag-the-peninsula"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8154","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8154"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8154\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/8155"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8154"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8154"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8154"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
