Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After being put in to bat first, Zimbabwe posted 169/2 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Australia were bundled out for 146 in 19.3 overs as Blessing Muzarabani (4/17) ran through their batting line-up.

While Zimbabwe’s victory is a significant moment for the African nation, it also carries special significance for India. Zimbabwe have beaten Australia just three times in their World Cup history, across both ODIs and T20Is, and on all three occasions India have gone on to win the tournament.

Zimbabwe’s first World Cup victory against Australia came during the 1983 edition, when they defeated them by 13 runs in Nottingham. In the same tournament, led by Kapil Dev, India went on to register their maiden World Cup triumph, beating the two-time defending champions West Indies at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

The second time Zimbabwe beat Australia in a World Cup was during the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa. The Prosper Utseya-led side defeated Ricky Ponting’s formidable Australia by five wickets in Cape Town. India went on to win the inaugural edition of the tournament, beating Pakistan by five runs in Johannesburg.

India register successive wins

Now, with Zimbabwe defeating Australia again in 2026, fans have begun to anticipate another World Cup triumph for India in the ongoing edition. The Men in Blue have made a terrific start to their campaign, having won both of their matches against the USA and Namibia.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led side sit at the top of Group A, with two wins from two matches and a net run rate of +3.050. They will next take on Pakistan on 15 February at the R.
