Independent legal and crime experts have backed Advocate Andy Mothibi\u2019s appointment as National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).<\/p>\n

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Mothibi\u00a0after several candidates interviewed for the position were not successful.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last month, an advisory panel interviewed six candidates for the role.<\/p>\n

Independent crime specialist Mxolisi Slevana believes Mothibi might have what it takes to transform the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) into a fully functioning entity, but admitted it would not be an easy task.<\/p>\n

“Because of all the corruption that entangles the NPA itself, as well as the political interference, it will take quite a bit of time. It needs somebody with a real backbone I\u2019m not talking about someone with cartilage, it needs someone with a backbone who can turn it around.”<\/p>\n

Melusi Xulu of Donda Attorneys said Mothibi had already shown his seriousness in combating corruption, having recently delivered a public report on the multi-billion-rand Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.<\/p>\n

“If he can bring that same drive to every matter he handles and considering his other records within the SIU [Special Investigating Unit], I believe he will be the right person to work and deliver.”<\/p>\n
