Purdue University invited a mathematician from Carnegie Mellon University to speak about the future of AI and how people should interact with it.
“When you have an AI doing something for you, you actually don’t really know what its intention is because it’s going to do whatever its operating system told it to do,” Professor Po-Shen Loh said.
Professor Loh used an example of a household robot powered by AI attacking the homeowner.
“How do you know that it will not, at 3 a.m., suddenly go grab the kitchen knife and off you? How do you know that the robot won’t get a sudden hack or a software update, which makes it go nuts?” Loh questioned.
One of the many topics covered by Professor Loh during his speech at Purdue was thoughtfulness, and how that is an edge humans have over AI.
“Thoughtful people are people who love to delight people, even strangers. The thing that I think that we will never be sure of is whether or not the AI really wants to delight people,” Loh explained.
Professor of Computer Science Ningui Li was at the talk. He told Star City News why he feels this topic is so important.
“I spend a lot of time educating the next generation. I also really think a lot about this issue. So this is to me, this is a very thought provoking and inspiring talk today,” Li said.
Professor Li thinks the biggest take away from the discussion was being a kind person to others. He also said this about professor Loh’s talks.
“I just think the professor is doing an incredible job,” Li said. “He’s thinking about these issues and talking to us and to everyone else about this.”
