Musk confirmed the Starmind branding on X, detailing a vision that would see up to one million satellites launched to handle AI workloads directly in orbit. The plan is staggering in scale, representing roughly 100 times the number of satellites currently in SpaceX’s Starlink constellation and several times the total number of spacecraft launched throughout human history.

“It’s always sunny in space,” Musk has stated, highlighting a core advantage of the orbital approach. By placing AI data centers in orbit, SpaceX aims to sidestep two of the biggest terrestrial bottlenecks: massive electricity consumption and the immense heat generated by AI processors. The satellites would be solar-powered and would radiate waste heat directly into the vacuum of space, eliminating the need for complex and water-intensive cooling systems.
