Illinois’ governor signed some of the toughest regulations on artificial intelligence into law. Governor JB Pritzker signed the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act into law.
There are several provisions to this. It requires large AI developers to to publish their safety practices and report significant safety incidents that could hurt the state within 72 hours of identifying the matter. They only have 24 hours to report an issue that involves an imminent risk of death or serious injury. Developers must also be audited for safety reviews by independent third parties on a regular basis. Fines for a first offense can be up to $1 million, then up to $3 million for any additional violations.

Illinois joins California and New York as the only states that require these audits and transparency reports. How effective will these rules put in place by Illinois without being too restrictive? Host Jim Niedelman got into the issues with former Rock Island County Republican party chair Bill Bloom and Democratic political consultant Dave Heller.
“I think this is a smart thing to do,” Heller said. “This is a great example of the state picking up the ball and running with it when the Congress dropped it.”
:It’s all going to come down to how it’s implemented and who’s actually doing the auditing,” Bloom said. “It requires companies to basically report this is where we see the potential for a failure or some sort of catastrophic result.”
