New Delhi: OpenAI is reportedly developing its first consumer hardware device, an AI-powered smart speaker designed to function as a screen-free home companion with deep integration into ChatGPT.

According to media reports, the device is internally described as a “humanlike AI companion” for the home. It is expected to sync with ChatGPT, offer AI-powered home assistance and learn about its users over time to deliver more personalised interactions.

The report suggests the device will have access to aspects of a user’s digital life, including emails, enabling it to provide contextual assistance. It is also said to feature mechanical elements capable of movement, with the aim of making it feel more like a physical companion rather than a conventional smart speaker.

The hardware is reportedly being developed with the help of several former Apple engineers who previously worked on products including the iPhone and Mac.

The reported project comes as OpenAI faces legal action from Apple over alleged trade secret theft related to hardware development. OpenAI has denied the allegations.

If launched, the device would mark OpenAI’s first entry into the consumer hardware market, expanding its presence beyond AI software and services. Details, including its launch timeline, pricing, and final design, have not yet been disclosed.
