Google is expanding AI Mode in Search with connected app support for Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music, giving users a way to move from AI-assisted planning into specific app-based actions. Google describes the update as a way to improve search results and help users “get more done,” shifting AI Mode further beyond answer generation and into task completion.
Search AI Mode Moves Closer to App Actions
The new connections let Google Search AI Mode interact with a small set of outside services when a user makes a request. Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music are the only apps supported right now, but Google may add more over time. The current examples are straightforward. If a user is planning a grocery list in AI Mode, ingredients can be added directly to an Instacart shopping cart for quicker ordering. If a user is creating a flyer, AI Mode can surface template options from Canva. If a user wants music recommendations, AI Mode can curate a playlist and save it to YouTube Music. That makes the update notable less because of the number of partners and more because of where the feature now lives. Connected apps were previously available in Gemini, but Google is now expanding that feature set into Search. For users who already treat Search as the starting point for everyday planning, the change puts app handoffs into a more familiar interface.
Limited Launch, Specific Requirements
The feature is not broadly available across every version of Google Search. Connecting apps is limited to AI Mode in the United States and in English. Once an app is connected, users can access the new app-linked features when making a request in Google Search AI Mode. Connected apps work on desktop and through the Google Search iOS app. That matters for users who rely on Search across devices, because the feature is not being framed as a desktop-only experiment or a mobile-only shortcut. The same core AI Mode concept extends across both access points, provided the user is in the supported market and language. The three launch partners also show how Google is positioning the feature. Instacart covers purchasing and grocery fulfillment, Canva covers lightweight design creation, and YouTube Music covers media curation. Together, they represent practical consumer tasks rather than enterprise workflows or advanced developer tools.
Personalization Remains Part of the Push
Google suggests users turn on history and personalized recommendations to improve the Google Search experience. The company also says it uses people’s interactions with Search and the new AI features to develop and improve generative AI experiences. That disclosure is central to how this expansion should be understood. App connections make AI Mode more useful because they can carry user intent into a service where the task can continue. At the same time, the feature sits inside Google’s larger personalization framework, where Search activity and AI interactions contribute to improving future generative experiences. For consumers, the immediate takeaway is simple: AI Mode in Search can now connect to Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music for a narrow but practical set of actions. The broader direction is equally clear. Google is moving connected-app functionality from Gemini into Search, and Search is becoming a more active layer for everyday digital tasks rather than just a place to retrieve information.
