Google has renamed NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook while keeping the source-based tool separate from the Gemini app. Gemini branding now covers the standalone notebook and its cloud code tools without turning them into a feature inside Google’s main Gemini app.
A secure cloud computer gives Gemini Notebook a remote environment that writes and runs code against material collected in a notebook. Google puts the product’s current reach at more than 30 million people and 600,000 organizations. Independent verification of those counts is unavailable.
Initial eligibility covers subscribers to Google’s top AI tier and eligible Workspace business customers. Pro subscribers are expected to receive web access over the coming weeks. Notebook access through Google Search’s AI Mode is also planned, but has no disclosed launch date.
What the New Name Changes and What It Does Not
Google is phasing the Gemini Notebook name and updated logo into its interfaces rather than switching every account at once. Starting July 16, the extended rollout may take longer than 15 days for feature visibility, affecting eligible Workspace and personal-account users. Automatic redirects will preserve existing shared notebooks and user links without administrator action.
Collaborators should be able to keep opening shared notebooks through existing links as branding changes reach different accounts.
Notebooks created in the Gemini app already sync to the standalone service, and Gemini can use their content as a source. Bidirectional notebook sync lets users move collected material between two connected products rather than working in one merged app. Gemini Notebook remains the dedicated workspace even as the Gemini app gains access to its content.
Future notebook access in AI Mode in Search adds another destination without replacing the standalone workspace. Until Google supplies a date, Search access remains a roadmap item. Current synchronization and future Search integration are separate stages, not evidence that the standalone product has disappeared.
Gemini Notebook’s remote environment can examine tables, write code, and combine information from supplied sources without requiring a local programming setup. Computation happens in the cloud, so users can run an analysis without installing the generated program on their own machine. Constraining inputs to notebook material narrows what the system can use, but does not validate its method.
A Bigger Research Role Brings a Verification Burden
The product debuted as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023 as a standalone research assistant. Google later prepared mobile apps, extending the same workspace before the latest name change.
Code execution predates the July rebrand. In June, an earlier NotebookLM upgrade added Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash model, Google Antigravity research capability, a secure cloud computer, and more than 100 curated software skills. Google’s rename places those capabilities under the Gemini Notebook identity rather than marking their first availability. Google plans Pro web access to the feature over the next few weeks.
