Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares jumped more than 5% in Monday trading after the chipmaker announced a major expansion of its strategic partnership with Microsoft (MSFT), positioning its next-generation silicon at the core of Azure’s cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads.
The centerpiece of the agreement is Microsoft’s commitment to deploy AMD’s Helios rack-scale AI accelerator in volume across its data centers. The Helios solution, which integrates 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs, sixth-generation EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking technology, and ROCm software into a unified, open-platform rack design, will power frontier-model AI inference for both Microsoft’s internal services and Azure AI customers.
“AMD and Microsoft have spent years building high-performance infrastructure together, and today we’re extending that partnership across the full stack of AMD AI solutions on Azure,” said Dr. Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD.
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella echoed the strategic importance of the collaboration. “By partnering with AMD, we are expanding the Azure infrastructure portfolio with AMD Helios, giving customers the performance, scale, and choice they need to build and run next-generation AI applications,” Nadella said.
The Helios system is designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale platform. The system delivers an aggregate 31.1TB of HBM4 memory capacity, up to 1.4 exaFLOPS of FP8 compute, and 2.9 exaFLOPS of FP4 performance. AMD is targeting 260 TB/s of scale-up bandwidth within the rack — matching Nvidia’s Vera Rubin specification — and 43 TB/s of scale-out bandwidth using UALink over Ethernet, roughly double that of its rival, though real-world performance of UALink over Ethernet remains to be proven.
Beyond the Helios deployment, the partnership deepens AMD’s footprint across Azure’s infrastructure stack. Microsoft will launch two new virtual machine series built on the upcoming EPYC Venice architecture. The HDv2 series is tailored for agentic AI and data processing pipelines, while the HXv2 series targets heavy-duty semiconductor design workflows. Microsoft will also expand its use of AMD’s Pensando data processing units, integrating the silicon directly with Azure Boost to accelerate networking and storage processing operations.
The deal marks another significant win for AMD as it intensifies its push to capture data center GPU market share from Nvidia. Over the past year, AMD has secured massive partnerships with OpenAI and Meta, involving gigawatts of compute installations and commitments potentially worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
Advancing AI 2026 Conference Looms
The Microsoft announcement arrives just days before AMD’s flagship “Advancing AI 2026” event, scheduled for July 22-23 in San Francisco. The timing has drawn heightened attention from Wall Street analysts.
UBS said in a recent note that the conference falls roughly two weeks before AMD’s own earnings report and just ahead of Intel’s quarterly results. While investors are focused on whether AMD can expand its AI customer base beyond OpenAI and Meta, UBS cautioned that the event will likely center on technology roadmap disclosures rather than significant revisions to financial models.
On the customer front, UBS continues to view Amazon (AMZN) as the primary large-scale client for AMD’s MI450x accelerators, with Anthropic also potentially in the customer pipeline. However, the bank advised investors to temper expectations for new customer announcements at this week’s gathering.
UBS expects AMD to deliver a comprehensive update to its AI product roadmap, including additional details on the MI450x Helios and MI500 series, possible early disclosures around the MI600 generation, and strategic positioning for emerging distributed inference workloads. The firm also anticipates AMD will provide a more optimistic assessment of the server CPU total addressable market. AMD’s last formal update, during its first-quarter 2026 earnings, pegged the 2030 server CPU market at $120 billion, and industry data has strengthened considerably since then.

The Microsoft deal reinforces AMD’s growing credibility in the hyperscale AI infrastructure arena. By embedding its full stack — GPU, CPU, networking, and software — into Azure’s backbone, AMD is positioning itself not merely as a component supplier but as a platform provider capable of supporting the most demanding AI workloads.
The Helios system’s scheduled shipment in the second half of 2026 aligns with an industry-wide scramble to secure compute capacity for increasingly sophisticated AI models. The recent emergence of frontier-class open models has only intensified demand, as enterprises and AI labs alike seek infrastructure that can handle both training and inference at massive scale.
The expanded partnership also highlights Microsoft’s multi-vendor strategy for AI infrastructure, ensuring Azure customers have access to a diverse range of silicon options rather than relying exclusively on any single provider.
