In today’s column, I provide a handy compilation of my year-long in-depth analyses and insights about the latest efforts in attaining AGI (artificial general intelligence) and ASI (artificial superintelligence) that I posted in 2025. The compilation encompasses nearly one hundred postings that mindfully reveal a wide array of crucial facets underlying the pursuit of AGI and ASI, including important insights and notable developments, as well as where this urgently evolving realm is headed. I have grouped the comprehensive listing into six major categories for ease of use.
Readers had asked me to put together an all-inclusive listing so that they could see the big picture of what occurred in 2025. The compilation also contains postings about my predictions of what will happen in 2026 and beyond.

Heading Toward AGI And ASI
First, some fundamentals are helpful to set the stage.
You undoubtedly heard or read something about AGI and ASI in 2025. I mention this because all types of wild stories were garnering outsized and overstretched headlines. AGI is here. ASI is here. AGI and ASI are going to save humanity. AGI and ASI are going to wipe out humanity. There were endless debates on AGI and ASI as being an existential risk, which would either enslave us all or opt to exterminate us.
The over-the-top stories rapidly deflated at the end of 2025. The expectation that OpenAI’s GPT-5 was going to be AGI had taken the air out of the room since it wasn’t even close to AGI. Predictions that AGI would be reached by the end of 2025 were clearly not going to reach fruition. Not by a mile.
Meanwhile, despite the hoopla, there is still a great deal of serious research going on to further advance AI. The general goal is to either reach artificial general intelligence or maybe even the wistful possibility of achieving artificial superintelligence. Some believe that the advent of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) has put us on a straight-ahead path to AGI and ASI. Others vehemently disagree and proclaim that contemporary approaches to AI are a dismal dead-end. No matter what is thrown at trying to advance generative AI and LLMs, it won’t attain AGI or ASI. We must find a different path, they insist.
One irksome aspect is that the very definition of AGI and ASI is up in the air. A bit of trickery at times occurs. An AI maker might decide to define AGI or ASI in a manner that benefits the AI they are developing. In that sneaky way, the AI maker can declare that they are on the proper path to AGI and ASI.
AGI is generally considered to be AI that is fully on par with human intellect and can seemingly match our intelligence. ASI is AI that has gone beyond human intellect and would be superior in many, if not all, feasible ways. The idea is that ASI would be able to run circles around humans by outthinking us at every turn. We have not yet attained AGI, nor are we on the cusp of ASI.
In fact, it is unknown whether we will reach AGI or ASI, or whether even AGI will be achievable in decades or perhaps centuries from now. The AGI attainment dates that are floating around are wildly varying and wildly unsubstantiated by any credible evidence or ironclad logic. ASI is even more beyond the pale when compared to our current state with conventional AI.

In 2025, I posted nearly 100 pieces that were focused on AGI and ASI. The titles are meant to be self-explanatory and readily clue you in regarding what the specific piece is about.

A slew of disconcerting questions confront the desire to reach AGI and ASI. Suppose that pinnacle AI can cure cancer, but what if such AI can also destroy humankind at will? Are we shooting ourselves in the foot, or are we saving humanity? Can we devise AGI and ASI to be aligned with human values and perhaps be benevolent to humans? Or will AGI and ASI essentially have a mind of their own, choosing to do whatever the pinnacle AI wants to do?
A twist is that we might not be heading to AGI or ASI anyway. If the belief that modern-era AI isn’t going to achieve pinnacle AI is a valid contention, we are debating about something that perhaps won’t materialize. Can we jump ship to some other AI technologies that would lead to AGI and ASI? Or are we so mired and invested in generative AI and LLMs that nothing else will get an iota of devoted attention?
Lots of hard questions and no definitive answers.
As the great orator William Jennings Bryan once remarked: “Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” Let’s put our minds together and ascertain how to best achieve AGI and ASI, especially to ensure the future of us all.
