OpenAI plans $20 billion data center in Effingham County
EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. —
Local leaders in Effingham County said Wednesday that OpenAI plans to build a major data center campus there, a project officials say could reshape the county’s economy, expand educational opportunities and help reduce property taxes for residents.
The campus will be built in the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub industrial park, according to a joint announcement from the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, the county’s Board of Commissioners and the Effingham County School District.
Officials described the development as one of the largest private capital investments in coastal Georgia’s history.
An open house for the public to learn more about the project is scheduled for Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Effingham College & Career Academy.
Jobs, tax revenue and infrastructure
County and development leaders said the project will bring a $20 billion capital investment and create 400 permanent jobs. They also said it is expected to grow the local tax base, support infrastructure upgrades and open new opportunities for local businesses, contractors and suppliers.
Brandt Herndon, chief executive officer of the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, said the project is designed to create “lasting value for the community” through tax revenue, high-paying jobs and workforce opportunities.
County Manager Tim Callanan said the investment could have a long-term effect on county finances and public services. He said officials believe the added revenue could help advance “Project Zero,” the county’s effort to eliminate homestead property taxes, potentially as early as next year.
Callanan said county leaders studied similar facilities and worked with the company and regional partners before moving ahead.
Focus on schools and workforce training
School officials said the project could also strengthen local education and career pathways.
Superintendent Yancy Ford said he visited several data centers before concluding the project would be a good fit for the county. He said the partnership could help ease the tax burden on homeowners while also supporting teacher and staff pay and expanding opportunities for students.
Officials said OpenAI has committed to supporting workforce development efforts with local schools, along with internship and career awareness programs for students. The company also plans to work with colleges and technical education partners.
Leaders said students could benefit from expanded exposure to careers in technology, engineering, cybersecurity, skilled trades and advanced manufacturing.
Community commitments
According to the announcement, OpenAI’s commitments tied to the project include long-term infrastructure investment, opportunities for local contractors and suppliers, and compliance with environmental rules at the federal, state and local levels.
Local leaders said they plan to provide public updates, hold community meetings and share project information online as the development moves forward.
Additional details on construction timelines, workforce opportunities and educational partnerships are expected to be released as milestones are reached.
