ChatGPT
Thousands of ChatGPT users ran into trouble on the afternoon of July 25, 2026, with complaints piling up over failed logins, chats that wouldn’t load, and broader access issues across both the website and the app. Independent outage-tracker Downdetector picked up on the disruption first, showing reports climbing steeply from around 2:54 pm onward against a normal baseline of just two, eventually crossing 1,560 within minutes. The scale of the spike pointed to a widespread issue rather than one limited to a specific region or feature. OpenAI has since acknowledged the disruption through its own status page, confirming that ChatGPT, its APIs and Codex were all affected.
OpenAI status page has confirmed the outage
According to OpenAI’s status page, the issue has been logged under “Elevated error rates,” with the company stating it is actively investigating the problem across the listed services. The incident has been marked as ongoing for roughly 30 minutes at the time of the update, with APIs, ChatGPT and Codex all named as impacted. OpenAI’s system status dashboard, which tracks uptime over recent months, shows ChatGPT sitting at 99.66 percent uptime, APIs at 99.93 percent, and Codex at 99.98 percent, indicating the service has otherwise held up well outside of this incident. Other listed OpenAI services, including FedRAMP and the Ads Platform, continue to show normal status with no reported issues.
Where user complaints concentrated
Downdetector’s breakdown of user reports showed ChatGPT accounting for close to 80 percent of all complaints, with app-related issues at 8 percent and API troubles, the kind affecting developers building on OpenAI’s infrastructure, at around 6 percent. Users also flagged trouble with login access, Dall-E, Sora and Codex, aligning with OpenAI’s own list of affected services. OpenAI has not yet provided a timeline for full resolution, and users are advised to check the company’s status page for the latest updates as the investigation continues.
