During an appearance on FOX Business Network’s The Claman Countdown, Palantir CEO Alex Karp discussed open-weight artificial intelligence models, their regulation, and why the U.S. should steer clear of Europe’s strategy. Karp, whose firm endorsed a letter backing open-weight AI models, cautioned that pushing back against competition could lead to a tech sector as stagnant as Europe’s. He stated he is not against Anthropic or all proprietary models, but argued that victory demands competing on the battlefield.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei countered assertions that his AI startup supports prohibiting open-weight models to bolster its market standing. In a statement on Anthropic’s website, Amodei wrote that anyone familiar with his past work should know he does not view such bans as helpful, and he made clear that Anthropic has never pushed for a ban on open-weight models. However, he disagreed with the letter’s claims that open-weight models inherently simplify developing safeguards or that broad access to capabilities benefits defenders more than attackers, suggesting the reverse might be more plausible and that biological weapons could outpace defenses.

Amodei characterized open-weight models lacking dangerous capabilities as a public benefit, noting their cost is confined to the computer required to run them, and they offer advantages to businesses, developers, and researchers. He concurred with much of the open letter, especially the role of open-weights in broadening participation in the AI economy, enhancing competition, and granting customers greater autonomy. He summarized his and Anthropic’s stance as not advocating for a blanket ban on open-weight models, but instead urging a focus on preventing powerful chips from reaching authoritarian regimes, halting industrial-scale distillation, and mandating safety testing for all sufficiently capable models, whether open or closed.

Major AI firms, including Nvidia and Palantir, joined the letter and unveiled a collaboration within the Open Secure AI Alliance, which seeks to create and disseminate more open technologies to bolster security in the AI era, acknowledging that threats can arise from both open and closed models.
