Meta launched Muse Code, its first AI coding agent, to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, intensifying price competition in AI-assisted software development. The launch matters for Mexico’s technology sector, which raised US$1.1 billion in startup funding in 2025 and employs approximately 390,000 software developers, as lower-cost coding agents could extend automation to smaller firms amid a persistent AI talent shortage.  

 

Meta Platforms launched Muse Code, its first AI coding agent, entering a market already dominated by Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. The terminal-based tool, now available as a public beta for macOS and Linux, plans software changes, writes code, and validates the results across large repositories. The release signals Meta’s push to generate direct revenue from its AI models beyond its advertising business.

Muse Code runs on Muse Spark 1.2, a coding-focused model Meta co-trained alongside the agent so the two work together, and it can launch multiple sub-agents to handle large engineering jobs in parallel, easing the need for constant developer oversight. Meta is pricing Muse Code around the same standard rate as Muse Spark, at US$1.25 per million input tokens and US$4.25 per million output tokens, while offering a discounted “contributor” tier that cuts costs by more than 90% in exchange for allowing Meta to use developer prompts and completions to train its models.

The launch reflects how AI-assisted coding has become the most lucrative segment of the generative AI market, ahead of conversational tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini, because coding output can be automatically checked and validated, unlike more subjective chatbot responses. Meta has been building toward this moment for over a year. In mid-2025, CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent more than US$14 billion to acquire a 49% stake in Scale AI and named its then-CEO, Wang, to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs, where he has since recruited senior executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The move comes as Meta faces investor scrutiny over its AI spending, after the company issued a lighter-than-expected revenue forecast and reported shrinking free cash flow in its most recent quarter.

For Mexico, the intensifying competition among Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI in AI coding tools arrives as the country’s technology sector experiences record momentum. Mexican startups raised US$1.1 billion in 2025, a 53% increase over 2024, and AI-focused companies captured a significant share of that funding, while Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, and Salesforce have committed a combined more than US$6.3 billion toward AI and cloud infrastructure in the country. Mexico’s broader technology workforce now exceeds 700,000 professionals, with roughly 390,000 classified as software developers and analysts, most concentrated in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Jalisco.

That growth, however, coexists with a persistent talent gap: over half of Mexican companies say a shortage of trained personnel prevents them from deploying more complex AI models, even as demand for AI-related job skills jumped 148% between 2023 and 2025. Lower-cost AI coding agents such as Muse Code could help narrow that gap by extending automated development capabilities to smaller Mexican firms and independent developers who cannot afford premium-tier tools. Enrique Perezyera, Director General México at Databricks,said that the rise of natural-language, or “vibe,” coding tools will bring “citizen developers” without formal engineering backgrounds into the development ecosystem, helping address the region’s specialized talent shortage while generating a new wave of applications built by professionals who understand specific business problems.

As agentic AI adoption accelerates, Gartner projects that 40% of enterprise applications will incorporate task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from under 5% in 2025. Meta’s entry into the coding-agent race, alongside its aggressive contributor-tier pricing, is likely to intensify competition on cost among the major AI labs, a dynamic that could ultimately benefit Mexican companies and developers navigating an already fast-growing but talent-constrained AI ecosystem.
