With less than 48 hours until Google’s annual Made by Google 2026 hardware event, anticipation for the Pixel 11 series has been dampened by the mediocre performance of the Gemini model. The event will take place at 6:00 AM Beijing time on August 13 (6:00 PM ET on August 12). Alongside the Pixel 11 series, Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 5 and new Pixel Buds earbuds.

However, behind this seemingly bustling hardware lineup, the real focus isn’t spec upgrades, but whether Google can extend Gemini’s AI capabilities from smartphones to the entire home ecosystem, truly realizing its “whole-home AI” ambition.

Continuing last year’s talk-show format, Google has invited renowned comedian Trevor Noah to serve as the main host. The guest lineup is equally star-studded, featuring podcaster Alex Cooper, cricketer Shubman Gill, actress Ayami Nakajo, and NBA star Stephen Curry.

Hardware Lacks Surprises, Pricing Remains High

According to the latest leaks, the Pixel 11 series will again include three slab-style phones and one large foldable: the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL, and 11 Pro Fold. The Pixel 11 and 11 Pro retain a 6.3-inch compact body, the 11 Pro XL features a 6.8-inch display, and the 11 Pro Fold boasts an 8-inch inner screen.

Notably, the base Pixel 11 may drop the telephoto lens added to last year’s Pixel 10, reverting to a dual-camera setup. Google has officially released renderings of a feature called Pixel Glow—a circular indicator light hidden beneath the camera cover glass. This light not only serves as a notification LED but, more importantly, displays Gemini’s background processing status, working in tandem with agent control features in Gemini Spark.

On the processor front, the Tensor G6 will utilize TSMC’s 2nm process, paired with a MediaTek M90 discrete modem, primarily optimizing power efficiency. All four models start with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, with only the top-tier Pro XL and Pro Fold configurations offering 16GB RAM. Leaked starting prices are $899, $1,099, $1,299, and $1,899 respectively—offering little competitive edge on pricing.

If these leaks prove accurate, the entire Pixel 11 lineup will see a uniform $100 price increase over the current Pixel 10 series, with no exceptions across all four models.

Gemini Becomes the Biggest Weakness, “OS+AI” Integration Faces a Test

If the hardware merely lacks surprises, Gemini’s performance directly lowers expectations for the entire event.

Users widely describe the Gemini 3.6 Flash model as “fast indeed, but dumb as rocks,” while the true flagship 3.5 Pro or 3.6 Pro models remain nowhere to be seen. Given the complete absence of recent teasers, Google will almost certainly not launch a Pro model at this event. This means the Pixel 11, marketed under the “OS + AI” banner, may have core AI capabilities weaker than simply downloading a third-party app like DeepSeek.

This foundational weakness shifts pressure directly onto the generative and agent-based features within Android 17. Functions including vibe coding widgets—which haven’t even appeared in Canary Beta testing—the Gboard Rambler input tool, and cross-modal automated execution via Gemini Spark all face the risk of delays. In other words, the Pixel 11 may struggle just to deliver on promises made at Google I/O in May, let alone introduce any unique standout features.

The Whole-Home AI Bet: From Phone to Entire Home Ecosystem

Google’s true ambition is for Gemini to replace Google Assistant, becoming an “ambient intelligence layer” spanning phones, Nest speakers, smart displays, and ultimately all connected home devices. Google Assistant is being phased out, a transition that has already extended from phones to Nest devices and is now advancing across all connected devices in the Google ecosystem.

From a business logic perspective, Google One AI Premium was rebranded as Google AI Pro in May 2026, maintaining the $19.99 monthly subscription fee while increasing storage from 2TB to 5TB and bundling Gemini advanced feature usage quotas. Google needs Gemini to be genuinely useful in home scenarios—not just answering trivial questions, but managing schedules, anticipating needs, and controlling devices without requiring a wake word every time. If this ambient intelligence layer operates smoothly, the subscription service becomes indispensable infrastructure; if the experience falls short, it’s merely a “stupidity tax.”

Competitive pressure is equally significant. Amazon’s Alexa+ already offers contextual home intelligence services, while Apple’s on-device AI sells privacy as its key advantage, deeply integrated with hardware. Google’s strengths lie in its search index, Knowledge Graph, and seven years of accumulated Assistant voice data—but this is also its Achilles’ heel. Consumer trust in trading data for convenience is declining. If Gemini’s ambient intelligence layer feels more like surveillance than assistance, user adoption will stall at early adopters.

Pixel’s Role as a Showcase Remains Significant

Despite the Pixel 11 series’ modest hardware specs, uncompetitive pricing, and the awkward reality that its touted OS-AI integration is hampered by an underperforming model, Pixel remains one of the few products on the market where a single company controls the operating system, hardware, and AI model simultaneously. Its significance as a “showcase” cannot be ignored.

Regardless of how the Pixel 11 itself performs, how Android 17 integrates Gemini features will have implications worth watching for the entire smartphone industry. From custom processors to cloud-based AI editing, to the already-powerful Google Assistant that predates the AI wave, Google has deep foundations—it just happens to be saddled with a less intelligent model generation this year.
