I teach a 300-level multimedia-design course, but last semester my most powerful teaching hack came from a 6-year-old. My daughter had scrawled two crayon figures—one with spiky blue hair, one with a superhero cape—and left them on the dining-room table. Instead of pinning them to the fridge, I uploaded the sketches to an “AI Image Combine” engine and typed: 

“Place these two characters on opposite sides of a college lecture hall, manga style; the blue-haired student is sketching UI wire-frames, the caped student is coding on a laptop.” 

Fifteen seconds later I had a high-resolution panel I could drop into Monday’s slide deck. My undergrads instantly recognized the stylized versions of their own in-class personas, and we spent the next 20 minutes dissecting visual metaphors for user-centered design. Zero prep time, maximum engagement. 

Below I walk through three plug-and-play workflows you can replicate in any discipline, plus assessment tweaks and academic-integrity guardrails. From Static Syllabus to Serial Comic (5-minute setup)

What you need:

• One syllabus paragraph you hate re-explaining 

• One 900-word reading students never finish 

• Two royalty-free icons (or your own doodles) 

Workflow:

Drag the icons into the “Image A” and “Image B” slots.  Prompt: “Merge these icons into a 4-frame black-and-white comic that summarizes [concept X]; use concise speech bubbles at 10th-grade reading level.”  Export the strip as PNG; drop into your LMS announcement.  In class, ask groups to storyboard the NEXT logical frame. Data I Collected: 87% of students accessed the comic (LMS analytics), versus 31% who opened the original reading. Average quiz score on the concept rose 12%. 

Debate Avatars & Ethical Scenario Generator

Philosophy, public-policy, or business-ethics instructors can skip the tired “randomly assign pro/con” routine. 

Have each student upload a selfie.  Feed the engine two class selfies plus a one-sentence ethical dilemma (e.g., “AI facial recognition in dorm security”).  Prompt: “Place these two students on a split-screen podcast set; one is holding a ‘Privacy First’ sign, the other a ‘Safety First’ sign; cinematic lighting.”  Email the personalized image to each dyad 24 h before the debate. The visual priming lowers affective filter; students report feeling “cast” rather than “picked.” 

Rubric Hack: add a “visual rhetoric” line item—does the podcast thumbnail they would hypothetically upload contain balanced color symbolism, readable text, etc.? You’re assessing digital fluency without extra workload. 

3-D Prototype Critique for Design, Engineering, Art

Instead of asking students to storyboard a product, ask them to storyboard the unboxing experience. 

Students sketch a rough mascot for their product on paper and photograph it.  Upload the sketch to the combiner.  Prompt: “Transform this 2-D doodle into a vinyl action figure inside a blister package; include a transparent window, branded base, and a computer monitor in the background showing a Blender wire-frame.”  Critique session revolves around packaging sustainability, material waste, and visual hierarchy—learning outcomes that used to require an entire 3-D printing lab. 

Assessment Twist: have students revise the prompt five times and keep a “prompt log.” You are covertly teaching iterative design and prompt-engineering—resume-worthy skills in the age of generative AI.
