The company said in a statement that workspace agents are an evolution of GPTs and are powered by Codex, enabling them to perform workplace tasks such as preparing reports, writing code and responding to messages. Unlike traditional chatbot interactions, these agents run in the cloud, allowing them to continue working even when users are offline.

“Teams can now create shared agents that handle complex tasks and long-running workflows, all while operating within the permissions and controls set by their organisation,” OpenAI added.

It said that the new agents are designed for workflows that require shared context, collaboration, approvals and handoffs across teams. Workspace agents can gather context from relevant systems, follow internal processes, request approvals when required, and keep tasks moving across multiple tools.

OpenAI highlighted an internal use case where its sales team uses an agent to compile call notes and account research, qualify new leads and draft follow-up emails directly into a sales representative’s inbox.

“It helps account teams spend less time stitching together details and more time with customers,” the company said.

To build an agent, users can select the Agents option in the ChatGPT sidebar and describe a commonly repeated workflow. ChatGPT then guides users through setting up the steps, connecting tools, adding skills and testing performance.

Workspace agents are being rolled out in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Teachers plans. OpenAI said GPTs will remain available during the testing period and that it will soon introduce an option to convert existing GPTs into workspace agents.

The company also shared examples of use cases, including a software review agent for IT ticketing and approvals, a product feedback routing agent for Slack and support channels, a weekly metrics reporting agent that generates charts and narratives, a lead outreach agent for CRM updates, and a third-party risk management agent that screens vendors.

OpenAI said templates for functions such as finance, sales and marketing will be available to help organisations set up agents quickly.
