Anthropic Hires Google Veteran Sana Ouji for Energy Team Amid Major Data Center Buildout - News and Statistics

Anthropic has brought on Sana Ouji, a former senior energy and data center executive from Google, as the San Francisco-based AI company pushes forward with plans to develop a large-scale global infrastructure network. This hire marks a notable step for Anthropic as it builds a team capable of executing what may become one of the tech industry’s most ambitious data center construction initiatives.

Building an Energy Team

Ouji spent over six years at Google, where her most recent work involved strategic investments and partnerships in data center energy. Her move is the latest in a series of senior infrastructure hires Anthropic has made from Google. In a LinkedIn post announcing her transition, Ouji described it as a deliberate pursuit of a greater challenge, noting that after six and a half years at Google she was seeking something new. She added that recent years have been transformative for the energy and data center sector and that witnessing that shift from within a leading AI company was a genuine privilege.

Ouji joins Ariel Horowitz and Tim Hughes on what Anthropic refers to as its first energy team, a label that underscores how recently the company began structuring this function. Horowitz, who started in March, was previously Deputy Director of Grid Modernization at the U.S. Department of Energy. Hughes arrived in February from Stack Infrastructure, a data center firm where he served as Chief Development Officer.

Recruiting from Google

Ouji is not the only former Google employee to join Anthropic. The company’s Head of Data Center Infrastructure, Winnie Leung, previously worked at Google, as did Brett Rogers, who oversaw data center construction there. Other former Google staff now at Anthropic include Liwen Mao, who serves as Data Center Design Lead; Adam Johnson, the Data Center Electrical Lead; and Peter Sarossy, a 20-year Google veteran who joined in January as a data center security engineering staff member. Zach Miller, after 17 years at Google, became Anthropic’s Data Center Operations Manager, and Soheil Farshchian, once a Data Center System Architecture Lead at Google, is also thought to have joined.

Infrastructure Investments and Strategy

In October 2025, Anthropic struck a deal with Google for cloud access exceeding one gigawatt, including up to one million of Google’s tensor processing units. In April, that arrangement grew, with Anthropic reaching agreements with Broadcom and Google for TPUs representing 3.5 gigawatts of capacity. Separately, the company has committed to investing $50 billion in U.S. data centers through a partnership with Fluidstack, with Google providing financial support for those projects. Anthropic says the Fluidstack partnership is expected to yield substantial new capacity, though construction timelines and specific locations are still being determined. Rival developer OpenAI has asserted in an internal memo that Anthropic made a strategic error by not securing enough computing power.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has described the planning as genuinely challenging, warning that being even a year off in growth projections could lead to bankruptcy. In this context, the formation of a dedicated global energy team and the caliber of individuals being recruited indicate that Anthropic views infrastructure construction not as a secondary concern but as a core strategic focus.
