Microsoft previously pledged to deliver a performance-optimized version of Windows 11 for devices equipped with 8GB of RAM, with rollout expected as early as the end of this year, aiming to give entry-level PCs a smoother user experience. However, this optimization program does not include compatibility with Copilot+ AI features. Spec sheets for Lenovo’s upcoming IdeaPad Slim laptop series reveal that 8GB RAM models will be labeled “Non-Copilot,” meaning they will not support Copilot+ features. Users who want the full AI experience will still need to opt for configurations with 16GB of RAM or more.

Over the past year, DRAM supply shortages and surging prices have forced more new PCs to fall back to 16GB or even 8GB memory configurations. Microsoft has adjusted its strategy in this market environment, committing to build a lighter version of Windows 11 for 8GB devices. However, Lenovo’s leaked spec sheets clearly show that IdeaPad Slim models equipped with AMD Ryzen AI 300/400 series processors—despite having AI computing capability in the processor—will be classified as “Non-Copilot” machines as long as memory falls below 16GB.

Notably, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Slim series uses soldered LPDDR5X memory rather than removable SODIMM modules. This means users who purchase the 8GB version cannot unlock Copilot+ features by adding memory themselves. Although the LPCAMM2 modular memory standard has already been introduced, the market generally believes Lenovo will not adopt this new specification on entry-level product lines.

The Real Focus of 8GB Optimization

For most users, the absence of Copilot+ features may not be the biggest disappointment. The bloat and inefficiency that Windows 11 has accumulated over the years remain the core source of user frustration. Recent testing found that Windows 11’s built-in Weather app immediately consumes approximately 1GB of memory upon launch, with peak usage reaching 1.6GB during active use. On an 8GB device, simply opening a weather app could trigger virtual memory usage, severely degrading overall performance.

By comparison, macOS’s native Weather app is a single native process consuming approximately 250MB of memory—just one-fifth of Microsoft’s equivalent feature. This contrast underscores the room for improvement in Windows 11’s memory management. Another competing product, the Dell XPS 13, shows memory utilization as high as 70% on 8GB configurations even with no user-launched applications running, further illustrating how much hardware resources the system itself consumes.

Market and User Impact

For budget-constrained consumers who can only afford 8GB models, the practical impact of missing Copilot+ features may be limited. Users who want AI capabilities can still access them through cloud services like ChatGPT or Google Gemini, with the only restriction being the need for an internet connection.

From a product positioning standpoint, Lenovo’s decision to explicitly label 8GB models as “Non-Copilot” actually helps consumers make clearer purchasing decisions. In the past, some manufacturers have been vague in their marketing about hardware requirements for AI features, leading users to discover incomplete functionality only after purchase. The clear labeling on this spec sheet at least reduces the risk of information asymmetry.

If Microsoft’s 8GB optimization program can effectively reduce memory consumption by the system and built-in apps, it would be a more substantive improvement for the vast base of entry-level PC users. Rather than investing resources in Copilot+ features used by a minority, restoring a smooth baseline experience may be the more pragmatic direction in the current market environment.
