Google is expanding its AI features for students with interactive visuals, quizzes, 3D simulations, study documents and a dedicated learning hub across Search and Gemini. The new tools are aimed at helping students understand difficult concepts, practise subjects and turn their own notes and files into study material.

Google is giving students more ways to use AI for learning, with a new set of features arriving across Search and Gemini. The updates go beyond simply answering questions, allowing users to generate quizzes, explore interactive models, work through problems and turn class material into personalised study resources.

The move comes as Google continues to expand the role of AI in its products and competes with OpenAI and education-focused platforms that are building their own tools for students. Here’s what Google is adding and how the new features are expected to work.

Google’s new tools for students

Google is bringing several new learning features directly to Search. Students can now use AI to create interactive visuals and simulations based on what they are trying to understand.

For instance, searching for the pH scale can produce an interactive visual explaining the concept. A student can then ask a more specific follow-up, such as where citrus fruits sit on the scale, and AI Mode can generate an experience tailored to that question.

Search can also create customised practice quizzes. Students can request questions across subjects including science, maths, humanities and foreign languages, with prompts that can be tailored towards particular exams or areas they want to revise.

Google is also preparing a new Lens-based learning experience. Expected to arrive in the coming weeks, it will allow students to photograph a problem using the Lens camera in the Google app. The AI can then explain the underlying concept, point out potential mistakes and offer guidance if the student is stuck.

Students will also be able to use their own learning material as a starting point. Search can work with uploaded PDFs, documents, slides and photographs of handwritten notes to create study resources. A student could, for example, combine handwritten notes with lecture slides and generate a condensed one-page summary of the key concepts.

What’s new in Gemini?

Google is adding several learning and research capabilities to Gemini as well.

Gemini Live will be able to carry out multi-step research on a topic in the background. Students can ask Gemini to investigate a subject, leave the conversation and return when the work is complete. Google will send a notification once the report is ready, after which users can discuss the findings or ask follow-up questions using their voice.

Gemini is also gaining the ability to produce functional 3D simulations. These experiences can include interactive models that users can rotate and zoom into, offering a more visual way to explore certain subjects. For example, a prompt asking Gemini to demonstrate DNA in 3D can generate an interactive DNA structure.

Google is also introducing a dedicated learning hub within the Gemini app. It will bring several study functions into one place, including study notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes.

Why Google is targeting students with AI

The additions reinforce Google’s effort to make Gemini and Search useful beyond conventional web searches, while putting the company in closer competition with AI services focused on education.

However, the expansion also comes amid concerns about how younger users interact with generative AI. Common Sense Media recently said Google’s AI-powered Search posed an “unacceptable risk” to minors after evaluating AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Google disputed the assessment, saying the study used a narrow set of ambiguous and contrived queries that did not reflect how people typically use Search. In comments to Mashable, the company described its AI Search features as “an incredibly useful way for kids and teens to learn, explore and make sense of information and the world”.

The question of access is particularly significant because students can encounter Google’s AI features through Search, Classroom and devices such as Chromebooks. Google had previously blocked direct Gemini access for users under 18, but reports later indicated that Gemini was being made available through student accounts in Classroom.

With these latest additions, Google is expanding the number of ways students can use its AI tools for revision and research. Whether those tools become dependable study aids will depend not only on how useful the features are, but also on the accuracy and safeguards surrounding them.
