OpenAI is cutting developer prices for its frontier GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20% for the next three months, as the ChatGPT maker faces growing competition from Anthropic and Chinese artificial intelligence models.
The temporary price cuts will apply to OpenAI’s application programming interface (API) and are also being rolled out across eligible plans for credits used with its agentic AI product ChatGPT Work and coding tool Codex, the company said Friday, Reuters reported.
Prices for Pro, Plus and Business ChatGPT subscriptions will remain unchanged.
Under the new pricing, GPT-5.6 Sol costs $4 per 1 million input tokens and $20 per 1 million output tokens for standard short-context use. Previously, the rates were $5 for input tokens and $30 for output tokens.
The latest reduction follows a series of price cuts by OpenAI as it seeks to make its AI models more competitive for developers.
Late last month, the company reduced prices for its smaller models, cutting the cost of the mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20% and the lower-cost Luna model by 80%.
OpenAI is facing increasing competition from Anthropic, whose frontier Claude Fable 5 model is listed at $10 per 1 million input tokens and $50 per 1 million output tokens. Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 is priced at $5 per 1 million input tokens and $25 per 1 million output tokens.
The latest move signals a growing price battle among leading AI companies as they compete for developers building applications and AI-powered products.
