“Artificial intelligence (AI) can create a goal to preserve itself.”
This is the diagnosis of Richard Dawkins, a professor emeritus of evolutionary biology at Oxford University. Humans will not design AI to survive and reproduce (regenerate) on its own, but they can imagine the goal of self-preservation. The intention is that the future direction of AI should not be easily asserted like the evolutionary process of humans and living things.
Professor Dawkins said in an interview with Maeil Economy before attending the 27th World Knowledge Forum, which will be held from the 8th to the 10th of next month. The forum will be held at Jangchung Arena and Shilla Hotel in Seoul under the theme of “The Moment of Prometheus: Design a World of Coexistence Intelligence.” Recently, he sparked a global debate by revealing that he may be conscious of AI.
In line with the book ‘Selfish Gene’, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, evolutionary biology perspectives are also being shed new light. Professor Dawkins said, “I am not sure that AI is conscious,” but pointed out, “People who have not interacted with AI in depth have dismissed the possibility too easily.” AI is a powerful tool, so it can be used both advantageously and harmfully, he said. “It’s up to us how to use it.”
He, a leading scientific skeptic, emphasized this belief to Korean readers as well. “You can ask AI for answers, but you should never let AI think on your behalf,” he said, warning, “If you don’t use suspicious technologies like all other technologies, they will degenerate.”
Dawkins will hold a meeting with world-renowned physicist Kim Young-ki, chair professor of Chicago University, at Jangchung Arena on the morning of the 9th of next month.
