Albertsons Companies has launched a new Safeway plugin within ChatGPT, enabling customers to manage and build grocery carts directly through natural language conversations.
The integration allows shoppers to search for items, generate meal plans, find current sales, and convert recipes or photos into actionable shopping lists without leaving the AI chat interface.
The plugin functions as a digital bridge between OpenAI’s assistant and Safeway’s e-commerce infrastructure.
Rather than manually searching for individual products on a store app, users can prompt ChatGPT with complex requests, such as reordering weekly staples or sourcing ingredients for a specific recipe, and receive personalised product recommendations based on their store preferences.
Users enable the plugin via ChatGPT’s directory and link their Safeway accounts.
Tagging @Safeway in any chat thread activates the tool, allowing the AI to pull relevant inventory and pricing.
ChatGPT populates a suggested cart based on customer requests and preferences.
Customers retain full control to review, compare, modify, or remove items before completing the purchase.
For security and transaction completion, the system redirects users to Safeway’s native web or mobile platform to finalise payment.
AI-Powered Strategy
This launch marks the latest phase in Albertsons’ AI-powered strategy, following previous rollouts of its proprietary AI shopping assistant and Ask AI capabilities.
These tools provide recommendations based on customer requests and reduce the steps required to complete everyday grocery tasks.
Jill Pavlovich, SVP of Digital Customer Experience for Albertsons Cos, explained, “Research tells us that consumers are increasingly interested in using AI to help with grocery shopping.
“By enabling our plugin in ChatGPT, we are making grocery shopping as simple as having a conversation by meeting our customers when and how they choose to shop.”
