President Lee Jae-myung will meet with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, to discuss cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI).
The Presidential Office said in a press release Monday that President Lee will meet Hassabis at his office on Nov. 27 to review the rapid advancement of science and technology, including AI, and to discuss innovation and the responsible use of AI.
Since taking office, President Lee has set the goal of making Korea one of the world’s top three AI powers. He has repeatedly met with CEOs of global Big Tech firms and asset managers, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, SoftBank Group’s Masayoshi Son, and BlackRock’s Larry Fink, focusing on expanding cooperation and attracting investment.
Hassabis, the founder of Google DeepMind, oversaw the 2016 match between Go master Lee Sedol and the AI program AlphaGo. He also received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing AlphaFold, an AI model that predicts protein structures.
“This meeting is an extension of the government’s global AI cooperation efforts, and it will serve as an opportunity to further accelerate policy through cooperation with a world-class AI company,” the Presidential Office said.
