SpaceX and OpenAI IPO Risks: High Valuations and Historical Caution for 2026 Investors - News and Statistics

According to a report on Yahoo Finance, SpaceX and OpenAI are reportedly preparing for what could be the two largest initial public offerings in U.S. history based on initial market values. While these listings are expected to be major events, investors are advised to exercise caution before buying in immediately.

Both companies carry very expensive valuations based on currently available financial data, and stocks that debut with large market values have historically been poor long-term investments for those who purchase on the first day of trading.

SpaceX has already submitted IPO paperwork and is on track to list shares in the third quarter of 2026. Earlier this year, the rocket and satellite company merged with xAI, forming a combined entity valued at $1.25 trillion. In 2025, SpaceX reportedly recorded a $5 billion loss on $18 billion in revenue, according to technology news site The Information. This results in a price-to-sales ratio of 69.

OpenAI has not yet filed IPO paperwork, but the artificial intelligence startup could go public as soon as the fourth quarter of 2026. The company closed its most recent funding round with a post-money valuation of $852 billion. Its sales surged 225% to $13 billion in 2025, and OpenAI says revenue will more than double in 2026. However, the company currently has a price-to-sales multiple of 65 and does not expect to become profitable until 2030.

For comparison, only one stock in the S&P 500 currently trades at a more expensive valuation than either SpaceX or OpenAI: Palantir Technologies at 75 times sales. This means that not only are SpaceX and OpenAI going public with enormous market values, but their stocks will likely also have very high valuation ratios when trading begins.

Looking at historical data, since 2000 nearly 4,000 companies have held initial public offerings on U.S. exchanges, according to Jay Ritter, director of the IPO initiative at the University of Florida. Those stocks gained an average of 30% on their first trading day. However, the initial excitement typically fades quickly as investors take profits after early price appreciation. Companies that go public with larger market values are especially prone to swift reversals.
