Microsoft and OpenAI are reshaping their long-standing partnership, loosening earlier restrictions and opening the door for broader expansion in the fast-growing artificial intelligence market.
Under a revised agreement, OpenAI will be allowed to offer its products across multiple cloud platforms, marking a clear shift away from the earlier exclusivity that tied it closely to Microsoft’s ecosystem. At the same time, Microsoft will remain OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, with new products expected to launch first on Microsoft Azure unless certain capabilities are not supported.
The updated terms are aimed at giving both companies more flexibility as competition in AI intensifies. While the partnership remains deep, the changes allow each side to pursue new opportunities independently while continuing to collaborate on core areas such as infrastructure and product development.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will continue to have access to OpenAI’s intellectual property for its models and products through 2032, but the license will no longer be exclusive. The deal also changes the financial structure between the two companies. Microsoft is no longer required to share revenue with OpenAI, while OpenAI will continue making revenue-sharing payments to Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap.
The revised pact also removes Microsoft’s exclusive rights to sell OpenAI’s models, enabling OpenAI to strike deals with other cloud providers and expand its enterprise reach. This is expected to give the AI company more room to grow beyond a single platform while maintaining its existing commitments to Azure.

From scaling gigawatts of new datacenter capacity, to collaborating on next-generation silicon, to applying AI to advance cybersecurity, and more, we’re excited to keep partnering to advance and scale AI for people and organizations around the world,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
