General Motors is rolling out Google’s Gemini AI assistant for model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles equipped with Google built-in. Roughly 4 million vehicles in the United States are eligible for the update, which will be delivered over the air in phases.

GM says the move represents an upgrade from the current Google Assistant experience. Gemini is designed to offer more conversational interactions, allowing drivers to speak naturally without memorizing specific commands.

“Gemini delivers AI assistance to millions of drivers across every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs,” said Tim Twerdahl, GM’s global vice president of product management. “That kind of scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation GM has built through OnStar over the past 30 years.”

The AI assistant can handle a wide range of tasks, from navigation and messaging to entertainment and trip planning. Drivers can ask for playlists tailored to their mood or route, request summaries of podcasts, or send texts that can be edited or translated using voice commands. Gemini also allows for back-and-forth conversations, enabling users to refine requests without starting over.

A driver could ask for directions to a destination, then add a coffee stop or search for restaurants along the route, all within the same conversation, says GM. The system is also designed to help users brainstorm ideas or prepare for meetings, turning the commute into useful time.

GM said the technology could be particularly useful for commercial drivers, helping plan routes, locate fuel stops, or find trailer-friendly parking.

The rollout is part of a broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into GM vehicles. The company said a more advanced, custom-built AI assistant, leveraging OnStar data and tailored specifically to vehicle systems, is expected later this year.
