PHOENIX (AZFamily) — More consumers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to save money when negotiating prices.
People are using AI to level the playing field when it comes to negotiating rent, salaries, car prices and subscription fees.
Andres Lares, managing partner of the Shapiro Negotiations Institute, said AI is a tool to help with research and preparation.
“You can ask, ‘Hey, I’m looking for this job or this type of home in this area, and what are all the comparables.’ It can do a lot of the research for you,” Lares said. “So that’s the good, but it’s important to have the one caveat which is you got to check its work. We’re still in a place where there’s a few hallucinations. So, you don’t want to anchor your entire negotiations on one precedent that AI spit out without you checking that source.”
Using AI for brainstorming
Lares said AI is best for brainstorming. Questions could include: What are five different ways I could frame this? Or how would I write an email? Give me two or three different options.
AI can also help come up with negotiables.
“Let’s say you’re negotiating a salary or compensation for your job. Often times we’re only thinking of the salary component. We’re not thinking about the paid time off, remote work, title. What expenses are covered, parking spots, it could be anything right. How much a 401(k) match is, all these things,” Lares said. “If you kind of have it give you a list of things you can negotiation, sometimes you’ll find something you haven’t thought about.”
Consumers can practice coming up with answers to pushback they might receive, or AI can help recognize delay tactics. Lares said AI does not replace negotiations; it just strengthens skills.
